Mrs. Maggie Vanden Baard was born in The Netherlands June 15, 1853, and departed this life September 3, 1941, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clyde Ricabaugh, in Des Moines, Iowa, aged 89 years, 2 months and 18 days.
She came to the United States with her parents in 1856. She was united in marriage to Cornelius Vanden Baard Nov. 11, 1875. To this union eight children were born. One son died in infancy. A daughter, Mrs. Ella Den Otter died 31 years ago. Her husband died July 24, 1934.
She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Jennie Renaud and Mrs. Gerrude Tuinstra, both of Des Moines, Ia., Mrs. Sara Van Cleave of Monroe, Iowa, Mrs. Minnie Intveldt of Reasnor, Iowa, Mrs. Nellie Ricabaugh of Des Moines, Iowa, also one son, John Vanden Baard of Otley, Iowa, 24 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren.
Besides these she also leaves one brother, John Van Bentum of Newton, Ia., two sisters, Mrs. G. T. H. Klein of Pella, Iowa, Mrs. Jacob Van Gorp of Monroe, Iowa, and a number of other relatives and friends to mourn her loss. One brother Aart Van Bentum died when he was a young man.
Her parents were members of the Reformed Church. He was also a communicant of that church. Later in life she obeyed her Lord’s command by being baptized. She epressed a definite faith in Christ as her Saviour. She was a devoted wife and mother and a very kind neighbor and friend. Even in the infirmity of old age she was always cheerful and resigned to whatever her lot might be. The fact that the Lord satisfies those who have made Him their refuge with a long life applied to her.
A short service was held at the Forbes Funeral home at Pella, Iowa, Friday, September 5, 1941, at 1 p.m. At 2 p.m. a service was held at the First Baptist Church of Monroe, Iowa. The services were in charge of Rev. Albert Vander Ploeg of Colfax, assisted by Rev. C. E. Sharer of Monroe. A quartette sang at Monroe and Mr. W. Wormhoudt sang a solo at Pella. Grandsons were the pallbearers. Interment at Monroe Cemetery.
