Garrett, Ethan Ortis – 1858-1953

Ethan Ortis Garrett, son of Amon and Ceclina Park Garrett, was born on November 6, 1858 at Salina, Iowa. He passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 1953 at the age of 94 years, 8 months and 2 days at the Jasper County Home.
On February 23, 1892 he was married to Josephine Wilhelmina Ammer and to this union one daughter, Alice May was born. He and Mrs. Garrett were among the organizers and charter members of the Fairview Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. He held a record for membership in the Fairview chapter of the Masonic Lodge and was one of the 10 oldest Masons in the United States in years of membership.
Mr. Garrett spent about fifty of hi seventy-five years in Monroe as a plumbing, hardware and tin smithing businessman.
He was preceded in death by his wife, who died December 26, 1951, a daughter, Mrs. Louis Thomasson, who died September 5, 1947, his twin brothers, John and James Garrett.
He is survived by his granddaughter, Mrs. Daryl Wood with whom he made his home, a sister, Mrs. George Casner (Sarah) of Portland, Oregon, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Elmer Harris of Boone, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 10, 1953 at 2:00 p.m. from the United Presbyterian Church, Monroe, Iowa. The Rev. Ralph Donaldson officiated and interment was in Monroe cemetery. The Co-operative Funeral home had charge of the service.
