Zachary G. Slocum – The son of George F. and Mary E. Barnett Slocum was born the 7th day of June 1879 at Coalfield, Iowa and passed away Thursday, December 26, 1957 at his home in Otley after a brief illness. He had attained the age of 78 years, 6 months and 19 days. His early boyhood was spent in and around Hamilton and Marysville in Marion County where he engaged in coal mining.
The year 1905 he was united in marriage to Miss Bessie Mae Waisner, who preceded him in death in 1909. Born to this marriage were two sons. He moved to Weld County where he took a homestead. Here he was united in marriage to Mrs. Nora Helen Tradewell Lee on April 30, 1915. Born to this union were 1 daughter and two sons. Mr. Slocum then returned to Marion County, Iowa in 1922 and has been a resident of Otley since 1926.
Preceding him in death are his parents, first wife Bessie Mae, two brothers, Sterling Hayes and George Fell.
Those left to mourn his passing are his wife, Nora, Fred S. Slocum of Ovid, Colorado; W. Clair Slocum of Moline, Ill.; (Anne) Mrs. C. E. Koons of Amboy, Ill.; George F. Slocum of Rock Island, Ill.; Thomas Slocum of Geneseo, Ill.; and one step-daughter Doris Lee at home, one sister, Mrs. Fayme Ford of Denver, Colorado, a host of friends and relatives including nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday December 28, 1957, 2 p.m. at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella, the Rev. John Staal of the Otley Reformed Church officiating. Interment made in the Monroe Cemetery.
