Monroe High School Boys Are Drowned
Loren Bowie and Dean Kane Would Have Graduated Friday Night
It Was a Class Picnic
Loren First Went Down and Called for Help. Dean Went to His Aid
Loren Bowie and Dean Kane, Monroe high school seniors, who would have been graduated with their classmates Friday night, were drowned late Thursday after a senior class picnic.
The two youths, both 17, had gone swimming with five other seniors in the Des Moines river near picnic grounds at Red Rock, seven miles south of Monroe.
With the other youths, Donald Livingston, Dale Mullins, Edward Vander Ploeg, Carl Balmer and Bruce Livingston, they plunged about for some time in the chilly water.
Suddenly Loren cried out and went down. Dean, a good swimmer, lunged through the water and reached for him. A brief struggle and both disappeared beneath the surface.
Donald Tarr, high school athletic director and class sponsor, sent for help while he and the other swimmers searched the river for their bodies.
As dusk fell along the river, L. C. Holmes, a Monroe baker, found the bodies in seven feet of water not far from where the boys disappeared.
With the help of Clifford Williams, Plato Alley, “Red” Johnson, George Haning and several others, the bodies were brought to shore. Loren’s arms still were locked around Dean’s neck.
Dr. F. M. Roberts, Marion county coroner, and Dr. C. S. Cornell, both of Knoxville, attempted to revive them for more than an hour, but without success.
Both boys had taken major roles in the senior class play the previous week. Both had played on the school’s athletic teams. Dean had played with an orchestra and the town band. He was the second son of Fred Kane, farmer living near Monroe. Mrs. Kane is dead.
Loren was one of Mr. and Mrs. James Bowie’s four children. The Bowies live in Monroe. - Express
