W. M. Vander Waal Dies Following Accident Injury
Manager of Insurance Co., Farms Is Struck While adjusting Chains
Truck Drivers Not Held
Injured Man Sustains Broken Leg, Skull Injury and Was Hurt Internally
Knoxville, Iowa, March 29 – W. M. Vander Waal, 35, died in the M. E. Hospital, Des Moines, Sunday evening from injuries received in an accident on Nov. 6, near Marysville, last Wednesday night, 12 miles southeast of here. Mr. Vander Waal, who was manager of the Yeoman Insurance Co. Farms, had just driven his truck on the pavement and was removing the chains.
Two Trucks In Crash
A few minutes later two trucks, one driven by Layton Russell of Perry, towing another piloted by Phillip Vander Meer, came from the south, down the long grade. Witnesses to the accident stated the rear machine was weaving dangerously and seemed to be catching up with the first machine.
Second Truck Hits Him
The first truck missed Vander Waal, but the second struck him, rolling him down the pavement. He suffered a broken leg, skull injury and internal injuries.
Dr. J. F. Stafford, Lovilia, was summoned and he ordered the Des Moines man be taken there at once. A Bussey ambulance took him. Neither Russell or Vander Meer were held.
Born Near Monroe
The deceased was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arie Vander Waal and was born on a farm two miles south of Monroe. Later the family moved to Monroe and then to Des Moines, where he was living at the time of his death.
Mr. Vander Waal is survived by his mother, his widow, a brother, Roy Vander Waal of Monroe, and two sisters, Marie Vander Waal, at home, and Mrs. J. C. Ferguson of Des Moines. Mrs. Simon DeHaan and Mrs. James Huyser of this city are aunts of Mr. Vander Waal.
Funeral at Des Moines
Funeral services were conducted from the Carl White funeral Home, Des Moines, Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 o’clock, Dr. J. F. Morris, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment was at Monroe.
Out of town people attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. James Huyser, Mr. and Mrs. James DeHaan and family and Ray DeHaan and family of Pella; C. D. Vander Ploeg, Monroe and Watson Vander Ploeg of Chicago.
