Janet I. Slycord, 51, of 629 E. 5th St. S. died from complications following abdominal surgery Tuesday, July 10, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Assembly of God Church in Newton with the Rev. Harold Schutte of the First Assembly of God Church in Oskaloosa officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.
Friends may call after noon Friday at the funeral home where family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Skiff Medical Center Nursing Scholarship Fund or to Hospice of Jasper County and may be left at the funeral home.
The daughter of Paul E. Slycord and Maurine L. Billman, she was born July 23, 1949, in Newton. She was a graduate of Newton Senior High School in 1967. She started her career as a nurse’s aide at the Jasper County Care Facility in Newton, working there from 1970 to 1974. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Skiff Medical Center in Newton for 26 years and retired in March 2001. She was a lifelong resident of Newton.
Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Paul E. and Karen Slycord of Mitchellville; two sisters, Joyce Slycord and Charlene Catlett, both of Newton; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, special dad Glenn Jacobs, and her grandparents.
