G. J. Eilander, Former Newton Businessman, Dies
Garrett Jerry Eilander, 50, of Rt. 2, Montezuma, a former resident of Newton and former owner of Merchants Storage and transfer Inc., Garrett Motor Express Inc., and Astro-Wash Laundromat in Newton, died Friday morning at the Grinnell General Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Wallace Funeral Home in Newton.
The Rev. A. B. Sudbrock, pastor of the Newton Baptist Temple, and the Rev. James Holmes, pastor of the New Testament Baptist Church in Des Moines, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Mount Zion Cemetery.
Survivors are his wife, Sonja; three sons, John David, Mark Allen and Matthew Joseph, all at home; four daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Lesa) Smith of rural Montezuma, Mrs. Marvin (Lori) Gass of Newton, Mrs. Randy (Tammy) Hall of rural New Sharon and Anna Lee Eilander at home; and three grandchildren.
Also surviving are three brothers, Burl, William “Bill” and Henry “Hank”, all of Newton; three sisters, Mrs. Fred (Clarice) Blake of Des Moines and Tietje Eilander and Mrs. Annie Thompson, both of Newton, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, the Rev. and Mrs. David Leeper of Lamoni.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
Mr. Eilander, who moved to Lake Ponderosa near Montezuma nine years ago, also had been owner of the East End Norge Laundromat in Oskaloosa and an agent for the North American Van Lines of Fort Wayne, Ind.
He was a charter member of the Newton Baptist Temple and was a member of the Newton Chamber of Commerce and the American Trucking Association.
The son of Henry and Henrietta Schloderdyke Eilander, he was born Aug. 1, 1929 on a farm near Newton.
He was married Nov. 2, 1955 in Everman, Tex.
