Funeral services for Sylvester “Sy” Eilander, 61, of Newton, were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel.
Mr. Eilander died from a blood clot Thursday, July 4, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was cremated following funeral services.
Interment of the cremains will be held later this week in the Veterans’ Section of the Newton Union Cemetery. Military rites will be held the day of interment.
Survivors are his wife, Janet, of Newton; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Sue, of Truman, Ark.; two step-sons, Roger Miller and Ron Miller, both of Des Moines; two daughters, Amy of Iowa City; and Shana of Ames; a step-daughter and step-son-in-law, Pam and Dave McDaniel of Des Moines; and eight grandchildren.
Also surviving are two brothers, Lloyd of Newton and Donald of Albia; and four sisters, Betty McDonald, Barbara Smith, Sherry Wharff and Cinda Shaver, all of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.
Mr. Eilander was a life member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was a member of the Military Order of the Cooties, Kellogg American Legion and the U.A.W. Retirees.
Mr. Eilander served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and later served in the Navy.
He worked in assembly at the Maytag Company for 26 years before retiring in 1992. For the past two years he was employed at CGB Printing in Newton.
The son of Berl and Marie Reynolds Eilander, he was born Feb. 7, 1935, on a rural Jasper County farm and attended Newton schools.
