Mrs. Franklin E. Delk
Reasnor (Special to The Daily News) – Sarah Dempsey was born Dec. 24, 1886 at Newton, Ia., and died on Thursday, Nov. 16, 1939, age 52 years, 10 months and 22 days at Harlan, Ia. She grew up in the vicinity of Newton, attending both the rural and town schools.
In 1904 she was united in marriage with Fred Gearhart. To this union eight children were born, the two daughters having died in infancy. The six sons who survive her are Theodore, Otis and Jack, all of Harlan, Herbert of Omaha, Robert of Guthrie Center and Walter of Missouri Valley, Ia.
Mrs. Gearhart married a second time on April 5, 1935 to Franklin E. Delk at Bethany, Mo. Since their marriage they have resided near Guthrie Center, Ia.
She was a member of the American Legion auxiliary and of the Harlan Methodist church.
At the time of her death Mrs. Delk had been in poor health for several months although the end came quite suddenly.
She leaves as surviving relatives her aged father, Mr. Eugene Dempsey of Hatfield, Mo., her husband, Franklin E. Delk, her six sons, two half-brothers, Arthur Gibson of Davenport and Enos Gibson of Ira, one half-sister, Mrs. Katherine Stillings of Winters, Wis.
Services were held at Schack’s Funeral home Saturday, Nov. 18. Music was by Mrs. Harry Sorenson and Mrs. Glen Winders accompanied by Miss Mae Harris.
Rev. Deane Chapman was in charge. Interment was at McKeever cemetery near Colfax Sunday.
Pallbearers were six sons – Ted, Otis, Herbert, Jack, Robert and Walter Gearhart.
A short graveside service at 2 p.m. was held Sunday in charge of Rev. A. A. Burr of Colfax.
Those from a distance who attended the rites were Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Gibson of Davenport, Mrs. Katherine Stillings and son and daughter of Winters, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Gearhart and Enos Gibson of Ira.
