Mrs. Della Smith Died Thursday, December 19
Mrs. Della Smith, 79, died Thursday, December 19th at the Skiff Hospital in Newton, where she had been taken a week previous after having fallen in her home. Mrs. Smith suffered a broken hip in the fall, and complications which set in as a result, brought about her death. She had been a resident of Colfax 67 years.
Mrs. Smith was born January 30, 1878 at Prairie City, Iowa, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Libolt. The very early years of her life were spent in the Prairie City area. When she was still a young girl her parents moved to Colfax where she spent the remainder of her life.
She attended both the elementary grades and high school in Colfax and after her schooling was employed several years at the early hotels and health centers in the community, assisting in much of the care of her parents in this manner.
On May 3, 1906, she was united in marriage to Chris H. Smith at Colfax, Ia. To this union four children were born, 3 sons and one daughter. Two sons, Ray of Colfax and Duane of Newton, and the daughter, Mrs. Ada M. Birch of San Fernando Calif. survives. Another son, William, died in infancy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, who passed away in 1940.
At the age of eighteen Mrs. Smith accepted Christ as her personal Savior and at that time upon her confession of faith, she was baptized and became a member of the Baptist church of this city.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon, December 23, 1957 at 1:30 p.m. from the Bumgardner Funeral home in Colfax, with Rev. Charles Reed, pastor of the Baptist Church officiating.
Music was furnished by Gomer Williams, soloist, with Mrs. F. B. Evans, pianist.
Bearers were Fred Wade, Loren Wing, Merle Montgomery, John Williams, Earl DuRocher and Alfred Husson, Jr.
Flower committee – Mrs. Henry Riley and Mrs. Gene Ray.
Burial was in the Colfax Cemetery.
