Colfax – Melvin F. Pierce Sr., 88, of Colfax died Wednesday, Nov. 6, at Mitchell village in Mitchellville.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Colfax with pastor Phil Butler officiating. Burial will be at McKeever Cemetery in Colfax. Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax is handling arrangements.
Friends may call after noon Friday at the funeral home where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the Alzheimer’s Association, Colfax First Baptist church or to the Ashton Chapel Building Fund.
The son of Faye and Margaret (Lynch) Pierce, he was born July 5, 1914, in Westside. On March 19, 1937, he married Viola Alice Nichols in Newton. He later married Dixie Elliott in December 1967. They divorced. Mr. Pierce worked as a die setter for the Maytag Company and retired in 1976. He also farmed. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Colfax and the UAW Local 997.
Survivors include seven sons and five daughters-in-law, Melvin, Jr. and Karen of Mingo, Donald and Linda of Milo, Larry and Marjorie of Papillion, Neb., Gregory and Tonia of Norwalk, Dwight and Georgia of Colfax, Kenneth of Colfax and Sklar of Ankeny; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gertrude Warrick of Mitchellville and Irene Warrick of Colfax; two brothers, Leonard and Willis, both of Colfax; a step-son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Brenda Botts of Des Moines; and a step-daughter, Lisa Sams of Colfax.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a son, two brothers, a sister and two half-brothers.
