Mrs. Berkley Succumbs
Aged Jasper County Woman Dies In D.M. Hospital; Rites At Mingo
Colfax (Special to The Daily News) – Mrs. Josephine Berkley, who would have been 94 Feb. 23, succumbed Wednesday morning at 1:40 o’clock, in a Des Moines hospital of influenza and complications from old age. She was taken to the hospital around a week ago.
Mrs. Berkley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jackson Dee, was born Feb. 23, 1852, in Chili, Ill. As a young woman she came to Iowa and Jasper county and married M. F. Berkley, who preceded her in death several years ago. She had resided in the Mingo and Colfax vicinities until a few years ago when she went to Des Moines to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Mae McMahon.
She was a member of the Colfax Presbyterian church, Order of Eastern Star and the Rebekah lodge.
In addition to her one daughter she is survived by another daughter, Mrs. Lela Perry, of Boone; one son, Ralph Cummings; one brother, Grant DeVaul, of Eagle Grove; a sister, Mrs. Eva English, of Newton, and several grandchildren.
The funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the Mingo Methodist church with interment in the McKeever cemetery.
