Mildred M. Bell, age 80 of Colfax, died Saturday, February 15, 2003, at Careage of Newton. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 21 at Walters Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax. Rev. Marvin Potter will officiate. Burial will be at McKeever Cemetery. Visitation for Mrs. Bell will be on Thursday, February 20 after 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home with the family present from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be donated to the Colfax Ambulance Fund or Hospice of Jasper County.
Mildred was born on July 3, 1922 in Columbus Junction, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar and Nina L. Hughes. Mildred graduated from Washington High School and received her Registered Nursing degree from Mercy College of Nursing in Iowa City.
On July 25, 1946 she was united in marriage to Raymond D. Bell in Washington, Iowa. She moved with her family to Prairie City in 1953, where she was a homemaker and farmed with her husband. In addition she worked as a R.N. for many years at hospitals in Des Moines and also at Clearview Manor in Prairie City. In 1967 she and her family moved to Colfax where she worked as Office Manager at Brayton Chemicals, Inc. until her retirement. She was a member of the Colfax Presbyterian church, Order of Eastern Star, Eastern Star Past Matrons Club and enjoyed fishing, traveling with her husband and also her time with her family.
She will be missed by a daughter, Marilyn Pierce and her husband, Doug of Colfax; their son, Matt Pierce and his wife Erica and their children, Devan and Ashley; also by a son, John Bell and his wife Carol of Asheboro, North Carolina and their children Jonathon and Erin Bell; as well as a brother, Col. Arden B. Hughes and his wife, Marie of Miamisburg, Ohio and many friends.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1997, two infant brothers and an infant sister.
