Zelma Bernice Slavens, 89, of Sigourney, died Wednesday, November 29, 1995 at Manor House Care Center.
Services were held Friday, December 1 at 4:00 p.m. at Reynolds funeral Chapel with Rev. Danny Lemons officiating. Burial took place on Saturday, December 2, at Ashton Church and Cemetery north of Mingo.
She is survived by a nephew Donald Borts and his wife Dortha of Sigourney; one great nephew David Borts and a great niece Susan Borts.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Paul Borts; and two sisters, Reva Morrison and Lena Geisler-Elscott.
She was born February 11, 1906, near Mingo, the daughter of Eli W. and Bertha Skinner Borts. She taught school in Iowa until 1958. She then moved to California and taught there until her retirement in 1971.
She moved back to Sigourney in 1989. She was a member of the California Retired Teachers Association. She attended the United Methodist Church in Sigourney, but still maintained her membership at Collins Christian Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Keokuk County Hospice.
