John R. Osborn, 68, of Newton died Friday, February 12, 1999 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Services were Monday, February 15, 1999 at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton. Pastor Sandy Mercer of the Mingo United Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in Ashton Chapel Cemetery.
Mr. Osborn was born December 27, 1930 to William Frederick and Violet Louise Brown Osborn. He married Jacquelin Mae Burns on September 10, 1951 in Mingo.
He was a lifelong resident of Jasper and Marshall Counties and grew up on a farm in rural Newton. He attended rural country schools.
John worked at the Maytag Company in Newton and retired as an inspector in 1984. He was a US Army veteran, Korean Conflict 1950-53; he belonged to the Mingo American Legion Post #534.
He is survived by his wife; one son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Lorena Osborn of Mingo, two daughters and sons-in-law, Joanne and Jim Dannels of Newton; Julia and Vernon Stodden Jr. of West Des Moines; and 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; six brothers; Robert of Arizona; Charles, Stanley and James of Newton, Stephen of Lakewood, Colorado, and Joseph of Excelsior Springs, Missouri; five sisters, Helen Hill and Ramona Russell, both of Newton; Ada Strick of Denver, Colorado; Shirley Hoyla of Des Moines; and Pat Anthony of Laurel.
He was preceded in death by his parent and two sisters.
Memorials may be made to Mingo United Methodist Church or Ashton Chapel Cemetery Assoc.
