Wright, Amos Marion

Amos Wright, a pioneer citizen of Colfax, passed away very suddenly Friday afternoon. He was found in an out building at 2:30 by his wife, who became uneasy about him, and on investigation found his lifeless body. She at once summoned help and had remains taken to the house.

Mr. Wright had been in poor health for a number of years, suffering from Bright's disease, and was unable to be about town, but was up and down, and on Friday he seemed better than usual, which seemed after his death to be a warning to his companion.

Amos Marion Wright was born in the state of Indiana July 14, 1835 and passed away at his home in Colfax August 29, 1919 in his 85th year.

He came to Polk City, Iowa, at the age of eight years, where he grew to manhood. After living in various places in Iowa he came to Colfax where he married Mrs. Lucinda Turner in November,1886. The greater part of the last 33 years of his life has been spent in Colfax.

Mr. Wright was residing in Missouri when the war broke out. He hauled a load of wood to town and the call to service was so strong, he unyoked his oxen turned them loose and answered his country's call. Soon after enlisting he was made Sergeant. He was soon captured as prisoner, later making his escape he returned to his Iowa home to again enlist in the 23rd Iowa. He was again raised to the rank of Sergeant. He was severely wounded and from effects he suffered the remainder of his days. Sometime during the war he joined the Masonic fraternity and later was transfered to the local lodge at Colfax.

In 1913 at the age of 77 years he united with the Colfax Methodist church and remained a faithful member to his death.

Deceased was a loyal citizen, a good father, a faithful husband, and was respected and esteemed by all.

He leaves to mourn their loss, his wife, two sons and four daughters, 3 step children, 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Mrs. Lon Hedges of Colfax, Iowa; Mr. J. E. Turner, Brookings, South Dakota; Mrs. David James, Burns, Wyoming.

The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 from the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. Edward Pruitt of Des Moines. The Masonic order gave their ritualistic service at the grave at Oakhill cemetery.
