Death Claims Kellogg Man Had Been in Failing Health For Several Years - Funeral Thursday Afternoon

John Wood one of the leading pioneer farmers of Kellogg died this morning at 6:15 o'clock after several years of failing health brought on by his advanced age and other ailments.

Mr. Wood was born in Ohio 75 years ago last September and has lived in this community since a very young man. Coming to Kellogg when the country was still new he settled in the vicinity of Kellogg where he still remains.

Mr. Wood was the father of two children. One little daughter three years of age proceeded him in death and his son Sherman has lived near his father's home and has assisted in his care during his long illness.

Mrs. Wood, too, has been most tender and patient in the care of the devoted husband who has been ailing for so many months.

Mr. Wood was the eldest of a family of 11 children and was the first of the family to be taken by death. He is survived by five brothers, James, Grant, Henry, Alex and William all of Iowa, and five sisters. Three of the sisters reside in Iowa and one in Chicago and one in California.

For years Mr. Wood was an active member of the Pleasant View church.

Funeral services for Mr. Wood will be held Thursday afternoon. The exact time and place for the services have not yet been announced. ~ Newton Daily News March 25, 1924

Obituary of John D. Wood of Kellogg
John David Woods

Kellogg, Iowa, April 3.-John D. Woods, son of William and Elizabeth Woods, was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, September 11, 1848, and passed away at his home where he had lived for 46 years, March 25, 1924. His age was 75 years, six month and 14 days. He was ill for two years and a half but was patient and cheerful to the last.

He came with his father's family to Jasper county, Iowa, in the spring of 1865, and began farming and remained on the farm as long as he lived. On October 16, 1873, he was united in marriage with Miss Bethania Masteller at Monroe, Iowa, and to this union two children were born, Sherman Edward and Della May.

His wife died in July, 1880 and a year later his little daughter died. September 13, 1882, he was married to Miss Sarah Moegart at Kellogg, Iowa. No children were born to this union.

When a young man he was converted at the old Friends meeting house where he attended as long as they had services there and after they disbanded he attended Pleasant View Methodist Episcopal church where he was a member at the time of his death. As a friend and neighbor he was loved and respected by old and young alike, and was always considerate of the wants of others.

He leaves his wife, son Sherman E., and two grandchildren, Letha and Jay, and five brothers and five sisters and numerous other relatives and friends to mourn their loss.

His brothers and sisters are named as follow: Hannah Patterson, Margaret Moberly, Henry, Alex, Adeline Young, James, William, Emma Smith, Matilda Donehey, and Grant. He was the eldest of this family of children and his brother Grant the youngest and he is 55 years old.

His brothers, Henry and Alex, were the only ones able to attend the funeral. Funeral services were held at Pleasant View church on Thursday afternoon, March 27, 1924, conducted by the pastor, Rev. C. E. Baumgarten. Music was furnished by Rev. C. E. Baumgarten, S. H. Watts, Ed White and George Warner, with Mrs. Frank Auten presiding at the piano.

The pall bearers were Messrs. Frank Auten, Thomas Vinall, Charles Simpson, B. F. Braley, O. G. Braley, and S. H. Watts.

Burial was made in the Slagle cemetery.
