Victor Wassgren Dies Suddenly At Home in Colfax

COLFAX-Victor Wassgren, 74, retired lumberman, died unexpectedly at his home in Colfax Sunday evening. He had attended regular morning services at the First Methodist Church and was apparently in good health. Death was attributed to a heart attack.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p m from Methodist church. The Rev. Paul K. Potter will officiate.

Music will by furnished by Miss Eleanor Howell and Mrs. Mary Woods. Dave Crawford, Tom O'Connor, Dave Crawford, Elmer Heffelfinger, Jack Graham, Jr., William Hughes and Tom Wilson will serve as pallbearers.

Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery in Colfax.

Born in Toderivan, Sweden, he came to the states when a small child and spent the greater part of his life in Colfax.

He never married. He is survived by relatives in Sweden and by a nephew, Frank Millburn of Colfax.

He was a member of the Methodist Church, the Red Men, Moose and K. Of P. lodges.

Obituary-Victor Wassgren

Victor Wassgren son of Matilda and Nils Peter Wassgren, was born on May 11th in the year 1873 in Toderivan, Sweden and passed from us at his home here in Colfax, Iowa, on Sunday, November 16th, 1947, at the age of 74 years, 6 months and 5 days.

He came to the United States of America when he was 17 years of age in the year 1890 and resided in Colfax, Iowa, upon his arrival. Later he traveled widely and returned to Colfax where he lived during the last 13 years of his life.

Mr. Wassgren was a member of the Redman Lodge in Colfax, the Knights of Pythias in Newton and the Fraternal Order of the Moose in Newton. He united with the Colfax Methodist Church on the 1st day of June in the year 1947 and remained a faithful attendant until the day of his death.

He leaves to cherish the memory of his long and adventurous life, two brothers, Otto Wassgren of Kiron, Iowa and Anton Wassgren of Madrid, Iowa. One sister-in-law, Mrs. Gust Wassgren of Des Moines, Iowa and one niece Miss Ada Wassgren of Harcourt, Iowa, also a grand nephew, Frank Millburn of Colfax, Iowa.

VICTOR WASSGREN DIED IN SLEEP EARLY MONDAY

Funeral Services Held Wednesday Afternoon From Bumgardner Funeral Chapel Victor Wassgren, 74, died in his sleep at his home in this city sometime early Monday morning, Nov. 17th, 1947. He was found dead in bed by Tom Naisbitt, who lived with him in west Colfax. Mr. Wassgren had been in failing health for more than a year and the past few months has noticeably become weaker, although able to be about most of the time. He was up town as usual Sunday afternoon.

He was born May 11, 1873, in Toderivan, Sweden, and came to this country in 1890 when a young man. He first settled in Burlington, Iowa, and lived with his brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Wassgren, later moving to Colfax when the family moved to a farm north of the city. He never married.

Mr. Wassgren spent much of his early life in the lumber camps on the west coast. Returning to Colfax he did considerable timberwork here, and also worked in the mines.

He was a member of the Colfax Methodist church, the Moose lodge and K. of P. lodge of Newton and the Redman lodge of Colfax. He is survived by two brothers, Otto Wassgren of Kiron, Iowa, and Anton Wassgren of Madrid, Iowa, a niece, Ada Wassgren of Harcourt, Iowa, besides several nieces and nephews. Frank Millburn of Colfax is a great nephew.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church with the Rev. Paul Potter officiating.

Music was provided by Mrs. LaVerne Woods with Miss Jean Binkerd accompanist. Mrs. Leo Carroll and Mrs. Mary Jane Thomas were in charge of the flowers.

The pallbearers were Tom O'Connor, Dave Crawford, Tom Hughes, Elmer Heffelfinger, Jack Graham, Jr. and Wm. Hughes.

Interment was in the Colfax Cemetery.
