Van Maren, Nellie (Van Cee)

Once more the cold hand of death has visited our neighborhood, without any warning, and taken from one of our most highly respected families, the dear mother, so suddenly that the whole neighborhood was greatly shocked, though her health had been poor for some time and her family could see her changing greatly; yet death was not expected so soon.

She had eaten a hearty breakfast with her family and had gone to attend to her duties as usual when her daughter Nellie, thinking mother gone longer than usual, went to search for her. When she entered the smokehouse she found her mother lying unconscious and unable to speak to her. Her brothers, John and Joe, having gone to the fields with their teams and her father had gone to town, no one was with her in that sad hour, but her cries for help reached some of the neighbors and they quickly came to her assistance. Her husband was sent for but before he could reach home his dear wife had closed her eyes in death never more to greet him in this world.

The heartfelt sympathy of the whole community is extended to the grief- stricken family in their sad affliction. May they put their trust in him who has said “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.” We as friends extend to you our heartfelt sympathy but he who is the great physician can heal you wounded hearts. May we strive to exemplify the noble Christian life of her who is not dead but she sleepeth. She lived and trusted in her Savior. May we all hope to meet her again where we shall never more be parted.

Nellie Van Cee was born in Netherlands on Oct 31, 1841, and had she lived until Oct. would have been 56 years old. She came to this country with her parents when but 8 years old, united with her church when 16 and has always been a consistent Christian. She was united in marriage to L. Van Maren on the 22nd of March 1864. This union was blest with nine children but several years ago the death angel visited their home and claimed three of their loved ones; six children are left four boys and two girls to mourn the loss of the departed. Their oldest girl is in San Francisco and could not be present at her mother’s funeral. Rev. Scolta from Pella had charge of the services and spoke in a splendid and most comforting manner.
