Newton (IA) Journal 12 January 1887
Death of Charlie Pardow

Charley G. Pardoe

Death has entered another one of our happiest homes and bereft it of a loved one, and left tender hearts crushed with sorrow and mourning.

Last Wednesday at half past 12 o'clock Charlie Pardoe, whom many of us have known from his birth, quietly breathed his last, and after long weeks of suffering. His death was not unexpected but had been hourly looked for for many days; yet this did not lighten the shock to his loved ones and numerous friends in whose hearts a lingering hope had remained that their dear one's life might be spared.

Charlie was the oldest son of Wm. H. and Fannie Pardoe and was born on the 13th of June 1860. His boyhood and nearly all his life was spent in this city. About five years ago he went to Colfax, and subsequently went into business. On the 14th of December, 1884 he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Lemen, who now, with their little year-and-a-half baby boy Carl, are mourning the loss of a loving husband and father. About 4 years ago he sustained injuries to his spine, which at first seemed trivial; and it was thought would soon pass away. But slowly his health gave way, and for over a year he has been under his physician's care.

Last October he came to the home of his parents in this city, hoping for the benefits which might come from a season of quiet and rest under the old homestead roof; but his hopes were not to be realized, and he continued to grow worse notwithstanding the tender care of devoted parents, loving wife and able physician. But when death came it found Charlie fully prepared to go, and he left to his loved ones, the brightest evidence that he had gone to that world of ever lasting joy and happiness.

This is the first time that death has entered the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pardoe, and broken the family circle.--One daughter, Mrs.Eugene Gillespie, of this city, and three sons, Harry, Frank and George, now residing in Minneapolis, still remain to them. To them and the young widow and her little fatherless boy all hearts go out in sympathy.

The funeral was held at the Pardoe residence on Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. G. Barton of the M. E. Church assisted by Rev. F W. Evans of Knoxville and Rev. Vall of Colfax attended by a large concourse of friends, many attending from Colfax and Des Moines, after which loving hands quietly bore him away and laid his body to rest in our beautiful cemetery.
