Services Today for G. Palmer, Newburg Resident

George William Palmer

Funeral services were held at the Smith Funeral Home for George William Palmer, 80, of Newburg, who died Friday afternoon at a local hospital.

The Rev. Richard Hempenius, pastor of the Newburg United Church of Christ (Congregational), officiated at the services. Mrs. Donald J. Renaud was organist.

Honorary casket bearers were George Mason, Richard Burroughs, Jess Carnahan, Clarence Sharp, Howard Weaver and Arthur McDowell. Pallbearers were Harold Palmer, Verle Palmer, Lloyd Palmer, Myron Palmer, Howard Sears, and Richard Sears.

Burial was in Chester Township Cemetery.

Mr. Palmer was born April 30, 1886, at Newburg to Anson and Abi Alden Palmer. He attended the rural schools one-half mile west of Newburg.

On Dec. 18, 1912, Mr. Palmer was united in marriage with Aletha Jane Dimit in Grinnell. To this union were born five children, four of whom survive.

Mr. and Mrs. Palmer farmed on the Palmer homestead one-half mile south of Newburg until 1955 when they moved to Newburg. Mr. Palmer was associated in the insurance business for the past 40 years.

A lifelong member of the Newburg United Church of Christ (Congregational), he had served on the church board for many years.

Mr. and Mrs. Palmer celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1962.

Survivors include his widow, Aletha; three sons, Kenneth Palmer of Rte. 1, Grinnell; Anson Palmer of Manhattan Beach, California; and Virgil Palmer of near Newburg; one daughter, Mrs. Ivan (Marie) Hunerdosse of Fairfield, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Edith Sears of Grinnell; two brothers, Austin Palmer of Denver, Colo., and John Palmer of Long Beach, California; 14 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Ethel Christine, who died at 15 months of age; and two brothers, Albert and Walter.
