The Newton (IA) Record Thursday, October 12, 1899
Death of Geo. A. Paine

Paine, George A.

Died, at his home in this city, at 6 o’clock on Thursday morning, October 5th, Mr. George A. Paine, aged a little over seventy years.

Mr. Paine was well known in this city and vicinity and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of everybody. He was quiet and reserved in disposition but very genial with those with whom he was best acquainted.

In former years he had been identified with the M. E. Church, but after coming to Newton he had failed to unite with any religious organization. But at the same time he maintained his Christian integrity and no man could live more strictly up to the golden rule than did George Paine.

Deceased was born in Worcester, Mass., Aug. 13, 1822. He came to Jasper County in 1866, settling near Kellogg, where in 1869 he was united in marriage to Miss Julia E. Robinson. Two children were born to them, E. G. Paine of Grinnell, Iowa, and Mrs. Lizzie May Custead of Ogden, Utah, both of whom were with their father when the final summons came. Mr. Paine and family came to Newton in 1877 and this has been their home since that time.

He had been ill for nearly four months and the last weeks of his life were attended by intense suffering. He was conscious to the last moment and when his daughter arrived from her distant home and all his loved ones were around him for the last time, he was anxious for the moment of final rest to come.

The funeral was held at the home on Friday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. C. V. Cowan, and attended by a large number of friends and neighbors.
