Obituary

Orton, Bessie (Sullivan)

Mrs. Bessie Sullivan Orton, wife of William D. Orton, was born February 21st, 1876, on the farm of her father, John Sullivan, two miles east of Prairie City. Her death occurred at Des Moines, Aug. 2nd, 1899, leaving her husband and little son and daughter.

Her home has been on her father’s farm nearly all her life, but about March 1st, last, she moved with her husband to a farm near Farmington, Ill., where her husband’s people live. Soon after moving she was attacked with measles, from which she seemed to recover, but gradually failed in strength, and on June 30th, with her husband and children, she started for Colorado, hoping the change might restore her strength. Arriving at Des Moines they visited a cousin of Mr. Orton’s, and she became very weak, but rallied, so that up to July 25th she was thought to be gaining. About that time she began to fail rapidly, and sank to rest on Wednesday last, without a thought of death up to the last moment. Her mind was clear to the last and none of her friends thought the end was so near.

The remains were brought to Prairie City Thursday evening, and taken out to the home of her childhood.

Friday afternoon a large company of relatives and friends gathered for the memorial services. The beautiful casket containing the frail form was lined and covered with flowers. A short service was conducted by her pastor Rev. J. J. Mitchell, assisted by part of the choir of the Congregational Church, after which the remains were carried to Waveland Cemetery attended by many friends and relatives.

Matt Orton and Miss Ida Farmer, of Farmington, Ill., arrived in time for the funeral.
