Obituary

Mrs. Eliza Oden died at Davenport, Wednesday morning, August 28, 1895, aged 70 years, 9 months and 17 days.

Mrs. Oden was one of the early settlers in Newton, coming here with her husband in 1855. Her maiden name was Hodges and she was born Nov. 11, 1824, at Peru, N. Y. She removed with her parents to Chillicothe, Ohio, when she was fifteen years old, where she met and was married to Mr. Charles Oden. They came to Newton forty years ago.

Five children were born to them, four of whom are still living and were at the funeral of their mother: Mrs. E. C. Hastings, of Des Moines; Mrs. Jennie Blanchard, of Newton; Charles Oden, Wisner, Nebraska, and Daisy Oden, Davenport.

Mr. Oden died in 1872, since which time the subject of this sketch has borne the trials and suffered the sorrows of the widow's lot with a Christian grace and fortitude that beautified and enabled her character day by day. She was a cheery, sympathetic disposition, a kind and helpful neighbor and friend, loved by all who knew her. She was one of the early members of the Congregational Church in Newton.

For a number of years Mrs. Oden resided at Davenport with her daughter Daisy, but still retained her property interests in Newton and spent much of her time here. She took ill last spring, gradually growing worse until finally the spirit left its earthly abode for the mansions in the skies. The change came quietly and as peacefully as sleep upon a child.

The body was brought back to Newton for interment, funeral services being held Friday afternoon at the Congregational Church, Rev. Harrah officiating.
