Woodbury Mudgett was born Dec. 5, 1844, in Fairview township, Jasper county, and died Feb. 6, 1933, at his home north of Galesburg at the age of 88 years and 2 months after a lingering illness of 20 months.

He was a son of John J. and Harriett Ann Mudgett, pioneers of Jasper county, who came from New York to Jefferson county in 1839 and moved to Jasper county in 1843, where they settled on a farm east of Monroe. He is the last of a family of nine children.

During the Civil War, he enlisted at the age of 18 in the Union army and served two years and 10 months with Company L, 9th Iowa Cavalry.

In 1868 he was united in marriage to Alice Sellman. To this union two children were born, William Wylie, living in Missouri, and Mary Alice, who died in infancy. In 1873 he entered a claim near Republican City, Kan., where he lived for six years, returning to Iowa in 1879.

On March 5, 1884, he was united in marriage to Harriett L. Awtry at Galesburg and to this union six children were born, Kate A., Arlie and Everett at home, Jack of Monroe and Mrs. Etta Winters of Galesburg, who, with his widow, survive. One daughter died in infancy. He also is survied by three grandchildren, Edwin Omar Mudgett and Louella Jane and Wendell Eugene Winters, one step- grandson, George James Hise, and several nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the G.A.R. and The Daily News Three Quarter Century club.

Funeral services were held in the Elk Creek Lutheran church Thursday, Feb. 9, conducted by Rev. H. U. Smith of the Methodist Episcopal church at Reasnor.

John Van Wyngarden sang "Does Jesus Care," "Beautiful Land," and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Arle DePenning.

Pallbearers were Fred Rohrdanz, Arthur Wheeler, Pete Zwank, William Ramer, R. W. Rohrdanz and Sherman Rinehart.

Interment was in the Hewitt Cemetery.
