Life Story of Mrs. Harriett L. Mudgett

Mudgett, Harriett Luella Awtry

Harriett Luella Awtry, daughter of William and Margaret McKinney Awtry, was born in Elk Creek Township, Jasper County, April 1, 1864 and died, Jan. 24 at the age of 94 years.

She was united in marriage to Woodbury Mudgett on March 5, 1884, at Galesburg and to this union were born six children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, infant daughter, one grandson, father and mother, four brothers and six sisters.

She is survived by three daughters, Kate and Arlie at home, Sarah E. Winters of Knoxville, two sons, A.J. of Hood River, Ore. and James E. of Grimes; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Mudgett was a former Knoxville resident, moving to Jasper County in 1942. She was a member of the Christian Church, Women's Relief Corps of Knoxville and Three Quarter Club of Newton. She was also one of the last known Civil War Widows in Jasper and Marion County.

Funeral services were held Jan. 26 in Morgan-Loehr Funeral Home at Newton with Rev. Cromwell C. Cleveland officiating. Burial was in Hewitt Cemetery near Galesburg.
