Miller, John

An Honored Citizen Gone

John Miller was born in Fulton County, N. Y., Dec. 29, 1833. He came with his parents to Kendall County, Illinois in 1842, and thence to Jasper County, Iowa, in 1853. May 19, 1854 he united in marriage with Lucretia J. Cannon, to whom were born eight children (five sons and three daughters) three of whom (two sons and one daughter) survive to mourn the departure of their parents. Sunday Nov. 19, 1895, just six weeks prior to his death, his companion was laid away to her last earthly resting place. Of a family of 14 children the deceased leaves three brothers and two sisters to mourn his departure.

As a man of integrity, as a congenial neighbor, and as a citizen the deceased commanded the esteem and confidence of all who knew him. He died of heart trouble on Sunday morning, Dec. 22, 1895, aged 61 years, 11 months and 23 days.

While not a member of any church, yet Mr. Miller in his daily life exemplified the true spirit of Christianity.

The funeral services took place from his home one-mile north of Metz on Tuesday at 2 p. m., Rev. Dr. Jacoby officiating, and the interment in the Metz (Sugar Grove) Cemetery. ~ The Newton Record, Friday, December 27, 1895, Page 1, Column 3
