The Newton (IA) Record Friday, September 27, 1895

Miller, Joseph W.

Died, at his home, east of this city, Saturday afternoon, Sept. 14, 1895, Joseph W. Miller, aged 71 years, 5 months, and 25 days.

Mr. Miller was born near Cambridge, Guernsey County, Ohio, March 15, 1824. Here he grew to manhood, and in 1846, on the 8th day of January, was united in marriage to Miss Margaret McGregor, of the same county. To this union were born eight children three sons and five daughters, of these a son and daughter died in infancy, the others were all permitted to be present at the funeral of their aged and honored father. They are, John S. Miller, of this city, Dr. Max Miller, of Newton, Kansas, Mary L., Lillian B. and Margaret, at home, and Mrs. George Warner, living north of town. The mother died several years ago.

In the fall of 1854, Mr. Miller removed to Warren County, Illinois, where he resided for twelve years, and from there he came to this county, settling on a farm east of Newton, which was his home until death called him to a better one in the Land beyond the river.

For several months Mr. Miller had been afflicted by cancer on the face. Skilled physicians and loving friends did all in their power for him, but could not cope with the disease that had marked him for its victim. He had been a member of the Presbyterian Church for over 25 years, and the sweet Christian faith, which had sustained him alike in sunshine and shadow for so many years, was all-sufficient for him when the dark cloud of affliction settled upon the closing days of his long and useful life. Mr. Miller was always of a very cheerful disposition, looking upon the bright side of life, and with the peculiar faculty of making all around him as happy and contented as he himself always seemed to be. He was idolized by his children, and respected by everybody.

The funeral services were held at the home on Monday, Sept. 16th, at 3 o’clock p. m. conducted by Rev. Scott. The music was by a choir composed of Mrs. Belle Rodgers, Miss Grace Hough, and Messrs. Fred Hough and Hal Wilson. The services were very impressive, and were attended by a large concourse of sorrowing neighbors and friends, who had known and honored Mr. Miller for so many years.
