Dies at Ripe Old Age
McGrath, William

Wm. McGrath an aged Irish gentleman who has been quite familiarly know about Newton for many years, died suddenly at the home of his niece, Mrs. Alex Carey, last Monday morning about seven o’clock. He had arisen from his bed and was dressing himself for the day, when he was suddenly seized with hemorrhage of the lungs death resulting almost immediately. He was a native of County Waterford, Ireland, born in 1811 his life’s journey covering a period of eighty-seven years. He came from his native Isle to America about forty years ago the greater part of his life since then being spent in the state of Pennsylvania. His aged companion, with whom he had walked side by side for many long years, united by the ties of love that had had their beginning way back in youth, passed “over the river” last June, leaving him lonely indeed, although cheered and most tenderly cared for by his children and relatives. He was a typical Irishman generous hearted, genial manners, with a kindly greeting for everyone he met. Deceased was a brother-in-law of Martin Welch.

He leaves four children Matt McGrath of Valley Junction, Joseph of Des Moines, Daniel of Valeria and Mrs. Agnes Ludlow of Omaha all of whom were present at the funeral of their aged father, which was held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 10:30 o’clock Wednesday morning, conducted by Father Moran, the parish priest. The interment was in the Catholic Cemetery west of town.
