The Newton Record Friday, August 27, 1897
Longren, Lewis

On Friday evening, August 20, at the home of his daughter, near the Brick schoolhouse south of town, Lewis Longren entered into the rest that remineth for the people of God. His life had been a long and useful one, in which he walked with God in faith, and hope, and love, and the end of his life was peace.

Mr. Longren was born in the north of Sweden, March 22, 1832. In his early manhood he served a faithful apprenticeship as a blacksmith, and was ever afterward a skilled workman in his chosen occupation. He was married in 1845 to Miss Anna Nelson and for 22 years they made their home in the old country. In 1867, they came to America and settled in Boone, Iowa. After two years at that place they came to Newton, and ever since that time they have been worthy citizens of the neighborhood a few miles south of town leading a quiet and peaceful life in all godliness and honesty. Mrs. Longren departed this life in October 1896, and now her husband has followed her into that world where there will be no further separation.

The funeral services were held in the Palo Alto United Presbyterian Church, on Sabbath afternoon, at 3 o’clock. Mr. Longren has been for some time a faithful member of that church, and a very large congregation of his old friends and neighbors came together with the relatives to pay their tribute of love and sympathy. The sermon was preached by Rev. E. J. Rice in the absence of the pastor of the church from John 14:1, Let not your heart be troubled.
