GEORGE LANE DIES; SERVICES HELD AT NEWBURG TODAY
George W. LaneGeo. W. Lane, son of George and Matilda Lane, was born near Eldora, in Hardin County, Iowa, on Nov. 6, 1870, and passed away at a Grinnell hospital on March 11, 1960. During his childhood and early adult life, he lived near and in Eldora, where he engaged in the farm machinery business. On June 26, 1901, he was united in marriage to Lillian McCullouch, a teacher in the Eldora schools.
In 1912 he moved to the family farm in Hickory Grove township, Jasper county, where he lived until 1936. During the next two years he was engaged in business with his son in Carroll. In 1939 he and Mrs. Lane moved to a home in Newburg where they continued to reside until his death.
He was a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge and was president of the Newburg Elevator Co. for many years. He was also interested in many other farm and community projects.
Besides his widow, he is survived by two sons, George H. of Ft. Collins, Colo.; and Carroll A. of Carroll, Iowa; four grandchildren; George A. Lane of Midland, Mich., Mrs. Frances Howland of Waltham, Mass., Jon Lane and Lynda Lane of Carroll; and by two great grandchildren, Christopher and Robin Howland.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. R. Gene Mack of Newburg and the Rev. Ivan Bys of Carroll in the Congregational church, in Newburg Monday, March 14, at 1:30 p.m.
Burial was in the Hazelwood cemetery in Grinnell with the services under the direction of the Huffman Funeral Home of Carroll.
