FUNERAL SERVICES HELD TODAY FOR MARY C. JOHNSON
Mary (Sage) Johnson (Cass)Mrs. Mary Cass Johnson, of Grinnell, died Friday evening at a local hospital. She had been hospitalized since New Year's Day.
Funeral services were held this afternoon (Monday) from the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Shireman, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiating. Organist was Mrs. Willard Heffner.
Serving as pallbearers were Ray Brubaker, Leonard H. Evans, W. G. Greenwald, J. C. Parrott, Laverne Raffety, and John Wallis. Burial was in Hazelwood cemetery.
Born on a farm in Malcom township, Poweshiek county, on March 9, 1886, she was the daughter of Frank Luther Cass and Elizabeth Jane Mitchell Cass. She attended rural schools and graduated from Grinnell high school. For a few years she taught in rural schools at several locations.
She was married to Russell Sage, who preceded her in death. They farmed northwest of Grinnell and later in the Searsboro area. Following his retirement from farming they lived in Marshalltown.
Later she was married to Thomas H. Johnson and they made their home in Marshalltown and in Kirksville, Mo. with winters spent in Texas.
Mr. Johnson died in 1945 and she continued to live in Kirksville until moving to Grinnell to be near her sisters several years ago.
She was a member of the First Baptist church in Kirksville and the First Baptist church in Grinnell. She had been active with the women's societies and Sunday school in her church.
Survivors include her sisters, Sadie and Myrtle Cass of Grinnell; and a niece; Mrs. Floyd Rice of Des Moines.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Russell Sage and Thomas H. Johnson, and a brother, James A. Cass.
