Johnson, Claude

Claude “Boge" Johnson, 75, of 709 E. 4th St. S., a lifelong resident of Newton, died of complications of a stroke, Wednesday evening, Jan. 22, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev, Rick Johnson of Dike, Claude Johnson’s nephew, officiating. Burial will be in the veterans’ section at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Friday where the family will be present from 6:30 to 8p.m.

Memorials to the National Sprint car Hall of Fame in Knoxville will be accepted.

Mr. Johnson was born Nov. 18, 1921, in Newton, the son of Henry and Clara Thompson Johnson. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1941 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945.

He married Anita Peterson Aug. 18, 1943, in Lancaster, Mo.

Mr. Johnson delivered freight for the Rock Island Motor Transit until his retirement in 1979. He also worked at Century Mercury in Des Moines.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, BPO Elks, Teamsters Retirees and the Knoxville Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Jane and Craig and Lene all of ,Prairie City; three grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret (Mrs. Don) McKinney, Alice (Mrs. Walter Taylor and Florence “Teddy" Wickett, all of Newton; and a brother, Forest "Johnny" of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son in infancy and three brothers, Clyde, Floyd and Robert.
