Death of Father Jarnagin

Jarnagin, Isaac W.

We were greatly surprised on opening the Monroe Mirror, a few days ago, to find in it an announcement of the death of Mr. Isaac W. Jarnagin, which occurred at the home of his son, Alpheus, near Monroe on Sunday night of last week.

He celebrated with the old settlers at Monroe, a couple of weeks ago, and although seventy-eight years of age, seemed in perfect health, greeting his friends with that warmth of cordiality so peculiar to his nature. He was a good man, enjoying the esteem of everybody, and his death carries sorrow to many hearts.

His funeral was conducted by the Masonic Lodge, the discourse being preached by Rev. Helmick of the M. E. Church.

He was a native of Highland County, Ohio, born Aug. 12, 1821, and was married to Matilda Gall in the fall of 1844. In 1865 they came to Iowa and settled on a farm two miles southeast of Monroe, where thy resided until 1881, when they moved into Monroe, where his aged companion died in 1897. Since that time he has made his home with his children, receiving from them the tenderest care and every attention necessary to make happy his declining years.

He was the father of seven children, all of whom survive him. They are Sarah C. Woody, Medford, Oregon; John H. residing in Woodberry County, Iowa; Julia A. Downing of Colfax; George A. of Summerville, Oregon; Joseph W. of Montezuma; Alpheus L. who resides east of Monroe and at whose home he died, and Flora E. Offill, who resides near Prairie City. All were present at the funeral except Sarah and George.
