John Helphrey, 79, Dies This Morning
John B. Helphrey died at 6:30 o'clock this morning at the County Home at the age of 79 years. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Murdock Funeral Home and burial will be in the Sugar Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Helphrey was the son of Lewis and Anna Helphrey and was born April 29, 1850. He is the brother of Lewis Helphrey of near Newton. ~ The Newton Daily News Feb. 17, 1930

Funeral services were held Feb. 20 at 2 o'clock at the Murdoch Funeral home for John B. Helphrey, who died February 17 at the County Home. Burial was in the Sugar Grove cemetery.Music was furnished by Mrs. Fred Reeves, accompanied by Miss Ruth Campbell, who sang, "No Night There" and "Does Jesus Care."
John B. Helphrey, son of Lewis and Ann Helphrey, was born in Utica, O., April 29, 1850 and came to Iowa in 1854, where he resided with his parents on a farm south west of Newton until Oct. 30, 1873, when he was united in marriage to Margaret Carrie Scott, who preceded him in death a number of years ago.
He was married later to Anna Coiner and to this union one child was born, who died in infancy. He made his home in Colfax, Ia. for several years and in the spring of 1919 went to West Concord, Minn., where he made his home on a farm with his nephew, Percy Helphrey, until a couple of years ago.
He is survived by a brother L. S. Helphrey and a sister, Mrs. C. W. Aillaud of Newton, a sister Mrs. C. G. Houck of Des Moines and one brother W. D. Helphrey of Couer d' Aline, Idaho. Those from out of town who came here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Houck of Des Moines, Mrs. Ben Apgar and Miss Mildred Frizzell of Centerville, and Mrs. Harmon Gill of Allerton. ~ Jasper County Record, February 27, 1930, page 5, column 1
