In Memory of Peter Hawk
Hawk, PeterLast Sunday afternoon about two o'clock a tide of human flesh poured into the Congregational church to pay the last sad rite over the remains of our honored townsman Peter Hawk.
Long before the appointed time the building was crowded to its utmost capacity. The moistened eye and the quivering lip gave testimony to the departure of a dear friend and an excellent citizen. The demonstration of sympathy and sorrow was universal as the funeral procession marched up the aisles. At the conclusion of the opening exercises Rev. J. E. Bissell arose, and in a clear, steady tone delivered the following address, which we print for the benefit of those who could not get within hearing distance of the speaker.
[There is a very long sermon printed here].
Peter Hawk - Uncle Peter Hawk, as many have pleasantly called him, was born in Franklin Co., Penn., Dec. 11, 1812, and was therefor at his death a little over sixty-nine years of age. Apprenticed to the tailor's trade, it soon became his habit, after the regular day's work was done, to put in extra hours of labor, that he might clothe himself and have some means of his own.
