Hawk, Charlie

Charlie Hawk committed suicide at Colfax last Friday afternoon, by taking morphine. The deceased was twenty-one years of age and was the only son of Dr. and Mrs. W. H. Hawk of that city. It seemed that the young man had recently returned from Colorado, where he had been for the past two years working in the silver mines, and since which time he had seemed to be dissatisfied, and had been planning to again return to Colorado, when he took the fatal dose that sent him into that other world. His funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Hawk and was conducted by Rev. Knight, assisted by Revs. Cozier and Laye.

Colfax Clipper: Charley Hawk aged 21 years, son of Dr. W. W. Hawk, took a half-drachm of morphine last Friday, and twenty minutes later was a corpse. He helped himself to the drug at the store of Gearhart & Co., where he was allowed many privileges. The Clipper Says;
Of the causes that led to this sad denouncement we only know that the young man had been dissatisfied and depressed ever since he returned from Colorado some eight weeks ago. He was unsettled and without employment or aim. A bright, handsome youth of convival disposition he steadily drifted into the swift current that led him to the whirlpool. His impulses were good; be he could not get steadied aright afor the battle of life, and so, he has given I up. The saddest thing about the terrible affair is the crushing blow to his parents, who have the sympathy of every person in the community. ~ The Newton (IA) Journal, Wednesday, Dec. 19, 1894
