Died of Cancer
Hansell, Richard

Richard Hansell, an estimable old gentleman whose home was in the east part of town, died a little after midnight of July 26th, aged eighty-one years, one month and nine days. His disease was cancer, his suffering from which had been so terrible that death came to him as a blessed relief.

Mr. Hansell was born in Philadelphia County, Penn., June 17, 1818. On January 1st, 1847, he was married to Sarah Ann Wharton. In 1854 they moved to Iowa, near New Sharon, where they resided until last April, when they came to Newton and built a comfortable new home, near their son, expecting to spend the remainder of their allotted time in peace and comfort. But the terrible disease cancer made its appearance, and rapidly accomplished its deadly work, against which neither love nor medical skill could avail.

Besides this aged companion, he leaves five children two sons and a daughter in Nebraska, one son in Missouri, and one son, George Hansell, residing in this city. To Mother Hansell does this affliction come with special force, giving up the faithful companion by whose side she had traveled along life’s journey for over fifty-two years.

The funeral services were held in the home at 2 p. m., on Friday, July 28th, conducted by Elder C. Hanna of the Christian Church. After brief services the body was laid to rest in Newton Cemetery.
