Death of Dr. I. A. Hammer
Hammer, Dr. I. A.The older residents of Newton and Jasper County will be pained to learn of the death of Dr. I. A. Hammer, for many years an honored and highly respected citizen of Newton, who died after a very brief illness, at his home in Chicago, on New Years evening.
Dr. Hammer came to Newton early in the '50s and made his home here for many years. From Newton he moved to Colfax and afterward to Des Moines, where he resided until about four years ago, when he removed to Chicago. He leaves a wife, one daughter and one son - Mrs. Fannie Todd and Mr. Edward Hammer, one son, Willie having perished in a railroad accident at Colfax, about 16 years ago.
The deceased was an active businessman, a successful physician, an acceptable local preacher of the M. E. Church and an active and influential worker in the field of local politics. In every walk of life Dr. Hammer was an upright, kindly Christian man and citizen whom to know was to respect and honored.
_____The Record last week gave a brief notice of the death of Dr. I. A. Hammer, a former highly respected citizen of our city and county, which occurred at his home in Chicago on the night of New Years. A private letter from his son, Edward, informs us that the cause of his death was heart disease and that the death ensued within twenty minutes from the first attack. The funeral occurred January 4, and the remains laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery, Chicago. The sudden blow fell with crushing force upon his family - especially his faithful and devoted wife who has herself been an invalid from heart trouble for several years. The warmest sympathy of their old friends here goes out to them in their great sorrow and bereavement. The Newton Record, Friday, January 11, 1895, Page 7, Column 3.
