The Newton Record Thursday, November 10, 1898
Hammer, Henry

Henry Hammer, formerly a resident of this county, but for many years an honored and respected citizen of Polk County, committed suicide at his home near Des Moines last week. No cause for the rash act can be given, as his domestic affairs were perfectly happy, and financially and physically he was all right. He and his wife were preparing to drive to the city, and he had gone to the barn to get the horse and buggy. Not returning, Mrs. Hammer went out to the barn where she made the terrible discovery of her husband hanging by a halter from the rafter, life already extinct. Mr. Hammer’s age was about sixty-six years. He leaves a widow and a family of six grown up children, one son being deputy sheriff of Polk County. He was a brother of Nathan Hammer of Adamson Grove, and a brother-in-law of Wm. B. McKinney. Mr. Hammer was preparing to make a trip out to Washington State to visit with a couple of his children. It is thought that in a moment of despondency he concluded to take his own life. He was a good man, enjoying respect and confidence of everybody.
