Rhodes - (Special) - While setting up sticks for peas in her victory garden here Thursday afternoon, Mrs. Clara Hale, 80, widow of a former mayor of Rhodes, suffered a heart attack and died. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church here in charge of Rev. H. W. Artman and burial will be in Eden cemetery

Mrs. Hale was born Clara Lenora Mead, second child of Elias and Caroline Mead, April 27, 1863, in Bureau county, Illinois, and when a small child came with her parents in a covered wagon to a farm a mile north of Rhodes, spending the rest of her life in this community

She was married to William Henry Emery, Feb. 16, 1882, at Rhodes, and he died Aug. 3, 1911. They were the parents of three children, now Mrs. Creta Owen and Mrs. Carrie DeReus of Valeria, and Clifford Emery of Colfax. She also is survived by one sister, Mrs. Phoebe Niles of West Plaines, Mo., ?1 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. One brother, Jasper Mead, preceded her in death

She was married to Howard Hale Oct. 21, 1921, and at the time of his death in 1937 he was mayor of the town of Rhodes.
