Evans, Leila

Lelia Evans, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Evans, died Tuesday morning, January 22nd, 1895, aged 15 years and four months.

Blessed is the home where the dark messenger only calls a loved one to become an angel of light. How can those who knew Lelia Evans, watched her as she passed through merry childhood to the more important stage of youthful life, and saw and felt the warmth and sunshine with which she was everywhere surrounded, believe that this life ends all for our loved ones?

She was the youngest of the family; the pet of the home; the favorite among playmates and a constant ray of sunshine and gladness wherever she went. She had entered upon her sixteenth year but with the growth in age and size came to no change in the vivacious, kindly, loving disposition. Never robust, yet always so well as to cause no uneasiness to the family until recently, when she has been ill, but not serious, and the last day began encouragingly for her recovery. In the evening she was worse, yet hope lingered with physician and family until the end came.

She united with the Methodist Episcopal Church of the place in February 1892, under the preaching of Rev. J. W. Lewis, who came from Marengo at the invitation of the present pastor, Rev. E. C. Brooks, to assist in the funeral services which were held at the Methodist Church Thursday afternoon attended by the scholars of her former room in the city schools; the Epworth League of which she was an active member, and her class in the Sunday school. An unusually large attendance evidenced the general earnest sympathy for the bereaved family.
