FINAL RITES FOR CHAS. L. EVANS HELD FRIDAY.

Burial Of Ashes In Ashton Chapel Cemetery On Sunday Afternoon.

Final rites for Chas. L. Evans, 72, were held Friday afternoon from the Bumgardner Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Edward Pruitt of Des Moines officiating.

Charles LeGrand Evans, son of C. W. and Mary Evans, was born on a farm north of Newton, Jasper County, Iowa, December 28th, 1875, and passed away in Colfax, Iowa, October 7th, 1947, age 72 years, 10 months, 7 days.

Three years ago he suffered a severe heart attack which with recurring complications had caused a health condition making for a miserable physical state and the pain, very severe, was endured patiently without complaining.

His life vocation was carpentering. He was a skilled craftsman, taking much interest in fine wood joinery. Being a journeyman over a long period of time, dependable, loyal, of high character, his services were always in demand.

Over a long period of time he was an active member of the First Methodist Church in Colfax, whose building he helped to do. He served as a Board member, was leader for several years of the Men's Bible class, was a well-informed Bible student, wide reader of worthwhile literature. Unfortunately, loss of eyesight in the last years of life was responsible for his having given up reading. The radio kept him informed and he used it to keep up on world happenings.

He was a Mason, Odd Fellow, Thirty-second degree Consistery member, also a Royal Arch Mason. Charlie resided with his parents in the declining years of their lives and gave every attention possible to be helpful.

He voiced to one of the near relatives that it would be best; he was ready and prepared to meet death and had no dread of it.

His Father and Mother preceded him in death. A sister Mrs. Ora Hanner and brother Frank L. Evans of Colfax survive; also two nieces, Mrs. Mary Redford, El Paso, Texas, and Mrs. Tyler Haynes, Springfield, Illinois and two grand nephews, Tyler Jr. and William Haynes, a host of relatives and friends mourn his passing.

Following the regular service the Masonic service was given with Riverside lodge A. F. & A. M. in charge.

Music as furnished by John A. Davis with Eleanor Howell, accompanist.

Pall bearers were Stewart McCullough, Robert McQuiston, Hugh Cordray, John H. Hahn, Thomas Hughes and Herman Lundgren.

Later the body was cremated and on Sunday afternoon interment was had at Ashton Cemetery.
