Samuel John Horswell Died Saturday
Samuel John Horswell, 78, of rural route two, Colfax, died Saturday evening at 6:20 p.m. in the Skiff Memorial hospital in Newton. Mr. Horswell had been taken to the hospital by the Emergency Unit of the Colfax Fire Dept., February 4th, where his condition grew steadily weaken, until the end came Saturday night. Death was due to a malignancy.
The son of John and Maria Horswell, he was born Dec. 28, 1878 in Yorkshire, England. He made his home there until the age of four, when with his parents, he came to the United States. With the exception of five years spent at Angus, Iowa, he has lived near Colfax, having been a resident of this community the past 67 years.
Mr. Horswell was a miner and later turned to farming as a vocation, following this line of work during his life. He is survived by one sister, Mary Ann Horswell, also of Colfax.
Funeral services were conducted from the Bumgardner Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon, at 2:00 o’clock with Rev. W. L. Hawn, pastor of the Methodist church officiating.
Music was furnished by Mrs. LaVerne Woods, soloist with Mrs. Bernard Waage, accompanist.
Bearers were Tom Wilson, T. A. Warrick, Arthur Beals, Faye Pierce, Jack Byers and park Pierce.
Those in charge of floral arrangements were Mrs. Faye Pierce, and Mrs. T. A. Warrick.
Burial was in the Sams cemetery near Mingo, Iowa.
