The Newton [IA] Journal Mar. 25, 1891
Dixon, Addilla (Helphrey)

Addilla Helphrey Dixon was born in Licking county, Ohio, May 31, 1819. Died in Newton, Iowa, March 21, 1891, aged 71 years, 9 months and 21 days.

On the 27th day of October 1836, she was united in marriage with Robert Dixon. In this union, which lasted over 51 years, she became the mother of five children, two sons and three daughters. The oldest and youngest of which Mrs. Major Smith and Mrs. A.K. Brown, reside in Newton, and John C. Dixon resides in San Bernardino, California, and Mrs. Frank T. Campbell, in Des Moines, and the youngest son, James A. Dixon, in Bowling Green, Mo., all of whom, with her faithful husband, were by her bedside when she died, except J.C. Dixon, the oldest son, and all of them together with her twelve grandchildren and many friends and acquaintances, in Newton and elsewhere, mourn her loss.

She had removed from Ohio to Iowa in May 1858, and had resided in Newton and vicinity ever since, and leaves many warm friends here, in whose memory she will always live. Her life, though a quiet one and lived mostly in her home, was appreciated by those who knew it, and she was loved most by those who knew her best. She was converted and joined the Christian Church in her 16th year, and remained a member of the same until in 1840, when she united with the M.E. church, of which she remained a faithful member until death.

As a Christian she was quiet, but firm and constant, always appreciating any and all of the means of grace that she was able to attend. She is at rest, and in the home there will always be a vacant chair—she will be missed as a neighbor and friend, but most of all she will be missed in her home, for there her life had mostly been spent.

The funeral took place at the home on Monday, the 23rd at 11 a.m., conducted by her pastor, J.W. Lewis, and attended by a large number of friends and neighbors, after which she was quietly laid to rest in Newton’s beautiful Cemetery, there to await the resurrection of the just.
