The Newton [IA] Record Thursday, March 17, 1898
DeVaughan, Mother

Grandma DeVaughan, aged widow of the late Capt. S. H. DeVaughan, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fannie Hughes, northwest of Newton, last Saturday evening, at the ripe age of eighty years. Mother DeVaughan was a native of Virginia, but came to Iowa with her husband during the early part of the late war, and settled on a farm a few miles west of Newton.

Mr. DeVaughan died several years ago and since then she made her home alternately with her two daughters, Mrs. Fannie Hughes near this city and Mrs. Adam Sharp in Richland Township. She leaves another daughter, Mrs. Fowler, of St. Louis, Mo., who was present at the funeral of her aged mother. Mrs. DeVaughan has been a member of the Methodist Church for many years her long life being one of constant faithful work for the Master.

The funeral was held at the home of Mrs. Hughes Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. V. Cowan.
