Caroline Elizabeth Emery was born to William Henry and Clara Mead Emery on Sept. 11, 1890 at Edenville (Rhodes), Iowa. She entered into rest at the Skiff Hospital in Newton on January 1, 1980
She was educated in various elementary schools, graduating from Rhodes High School and Marshall County Normal as a teacher. She taught in the Haverhill area
On Dec. 17, 1913 she was united in marriage to Claud DeReus in Valeria. They farmed for several years, then moving to Valeria, where she served as Town Clerk for many years
Since April, 1974 she has resided at the Embassy Manor in Newton, where she and Claud moved when health no longer permitted them to maintain their home in Valeria
To Claud and Carrie (as she was known) were born: Beulah Fern Gerhart of Mingo and a son, Dwight Emery DeReus, who was stillborn
Surviving in addition to Mrs. Gerhart are five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and friends
Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, a sister, a brother, stepfather and 2 great-grandchildren
Mrs. DeReus has been a member of the former Valeria Methodist Church, holding many offices there
Services were held at the Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax Friday, January 4, 1980 at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Charles Luers officiating
Casket bearers were Roy Warrick, Joe Morrisey, Charlie O'Roake, Bernie Blubaugh, Bernie Relph and Randy Wagner. Honorary casket bearers were Clyde Warrick, Russ Snow, John Gannon and Lyle Ayers
Mrs. Edith Wagner and Mrs. Mollie Warrick were on the flower committee
