The Newton [IA] Record Friday, October 1, 1897
Death of Emma Derbyshire
Derbyshire, Emma

The many friends of Miss Derbyshire received with sorrow the news of her death, which occurred at the home of C. D. Holt, near Kenosha, Wisconsin, at 7:30 o’clock last Monday morning.

About four months ago, accompanied by her sister, Mrs. W. J. Morgan, she went to Chicago to be treated at the Presbyterian Hospital of that city, and afterwards, during her convalescence, she and her sister went to their old home at Kenosha, where she was attacked with typhoid fever, which resulted in her death.

Last Saturday a telegram was received announcing her dangerous condition, and her sister, Mrs. Albert Lufkin, started immediately and arrived at her bedside on Sunday evening in time to see and talk to her before her death.

The remains, accompanied by Mrs. Lufkin and Mrs. Morgan, arrived in Newton Wednesday morning, and were taken to the Lufkin home where the funeral services were held at 10 o’clock Thursday morning, conducted by her pastor, Rev. E. J. Rice, of the Presbyterian Church.

Miss Emma J. Derbyshire was born in Pleasant Prairie, near Kenosha, Wis., where her childhood and most of her early life was spent. She has been a resident of Newton for about sixteen years, and has made her home with Mrs. Albert Lufkin. She was a devoted Christian woman, and for many years an active member of the Presbyterian Church untiring in her efforts to advance the cause of the Master. For the past seven years she has been City Librarian, filling the position to the utmost satisfaction of everybody, winning especially the love and admiration of the young people who have frequented the library building, and will in the future miss the pleasant smile and cordial greeting with which she always met them.
