The Newton Record Thursday, March 8, 1900
At the Ripe Age of Ninety-Three
Derbyshire, Delia (Morgan)

Grandma Derbyshire passed away last Thursday evening at the hospital at Mt. Pleasant, having almost reached the age of ninety-three years. On Thursday morning the day of her death the usual monthly letter came from the superintendent saying her health was about as usual; and when the telegram told of her death, it was a shock to her loved ones, although they knew that the end was liable to come at any time. The remains were brought to Newton for interment, arriving here on Saturday, and were taken to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albert Lufkin.

Delia Morgan was born July 26, 1807, at Utica, New York, where her childhood was spent, and where in the year 1832, she was married to Sidney Derbyshire, with whom she lived happily for nearly a half century Mr. Derbyshire dying in Beloit, Wis., in January 1881. To them were born seven children, all of whom are still living excepting Emma, who died a little over two years ago. After the death of her husband, Mother Derbyshire came to Newton to live with her two daughters, Mrs. Walter J. Morgan and Mrs. Albert Lufkin and soon afterward the remains of her companion were removed from Wisconsin and interred in the Newton Cemetery.

Mother Derbyshire was a lovely old lady, kind and gentle in disposition and manners from her sweet face always shinning the light and goodness of her pure character. All who knew her loved her. Three years ago her mind became clouded and her friends were compelled to place her in the hospital at Mt. Pleasant for treatment hoping that her reason might again be restored a hope that was never realized.

Funeral services were held at the home of Albert Lufkin, on Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. R. F. Chambers of the Presbyterian Church, Mother Derbyshire having been a member of that denomination from her childhood. Charles Derbyshire of Beloit, Wis., arrived in time to look upon the face of his loved one, and to unite with his two sisters, Mrs. Lufkin and Mrs. Morgan, in paying the last tribute of love to their sainted mother.
