Cross, Emma (Evans)Last Monday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock Mrs. Emma Evans Cross, wife of Eli D. Cross of Ira, died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Evans, in this city, age forty-three years, five months and fifteen days.
Emma Evans was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, April 11, 1855. With her parents she come to Newton on the 5th day of November 1865, where her home continued to be until September 16th, 1896 only a little over two years ago when she united in marriage to Eli D. Cross, an old and highly respected citizen of Jasper County, and went with him to his home near Ira.
For the past year she had been in very poor health, and about a month ago she came to the home of her parents here, where on Saturday night of Sept. 16th a baby boy was born and died immediately after birth. The death of the mother came very unexpectedly, as she seemed to be improving very satisfactorily up to within a couple of hours before the final summons came. It is a sad stroke to her husband, aged parents and sisters of the deceased, who had had every reason to hope that the life of their loved one would be spared to them. Mrs. Cross had been a Christian from her childhood and died happy in the bright hope of a blessed immortality that awaited her.
The funeral services were held at the First M. E. Church yesterday afternoon, conducted by Rev. John Ferguson of the U. P. Church, the pastor Rev. Cowan being absent at Conference. The remains were laid to rest beside her baby in the cemetery in Wild Cat Grove [Palo Alto].
